    We spoke to Soly customer Gordon Dolan from Shropshire about his experience

    Can you tell me about the solar system you had installed?

    I had 14 jinko panels installed on my roof, along with a GivEnergy 5kW hybrid inverter and a GivEnergy 9.5kWh battery.

     

    When did you have your solar panels installed and how long did the process take?

    I spent about 2-3 months researching solar energy and the options available. I looked at 6 different solar companies, getting details of the products they could offer me and requesting quotes for my own solar project.

    Soly was recommended by Which? as they are a certified Which? Trusted Trader and my first contact with the company was in December when I had an online consultation with one of their solar experts. The sales consultant was very knowledgeable and he sent me some proposals for different types of systems, which I looked at and researched, but none of them were quite what I wanted. However, I liked the products Soly had on offer so I later got back in contact to ask if I could get 14 panels on my roof, which they said would be possible.

    I took my time with the process as I knew it was going to be quite a big outlay and wanted to make sure I had done my research and understood my needs. Soly was good value for money compared to other companies I had spoken to so I decided to accept Soly’s proposal on 8th March. I then had to wait for technical approval and I was out of the country in April. Soly contacted me again when I was back and the installation day was arranged for 10th May.

    What led you to look into solar panels?

    I looked into solar panels about 10-15 years ago, but back then it seemed to be very complicated so I steered away from it. Then I was on a 2 year fixed contract with Scottish Power for both gas and electric so I managed to dodge all the energy price rises. However, when this contract ended, I looked around for the lowest rates I could find and made a couple of switches but I couldn’t avoid paying about £250 a month for gas and electric. With paying that much out per month, I thought I would look into getting solar panels as I knew I had a good house for a solar set up.

    I initially found Soly through Which? and decided to go with them over other companies after lots of research on the various companies and the products they were supplying. Other companies were offering different panels and inverters that weren’t as efficient. I concluded that Soly were supplying the best products at the best price and through my research I saw that GivEnergy products were getting good write ups.

     

    What was the Soly sales process like?

    It worked well for me right from the very beginning. The sales consultant was very knowledgeable and having done a bit of research myself, I could tell he knew his stuff. I dealt with other companies where I felt that the sales people didn’t know what they were talking about. With Soly, the consultation was really good and I was impressed with the system the sales consultant built for me. I didn’t have any problems with the digital process, I was able to send over the necessary photos for the technical review and everything went smoothly.

    How did the installation day go? 

    The installation day was brilliant. I received good contact by the way of texts from the scaffolding company: they texted me and gave me a date for installation and they turned up on time. They showed great respect to my property as they protected the patio without me having to ask. The electrical team turned up at 8am on the day as arranged and the installation went ahead with no issues. They left at about 4pm, by which time everything was set up. Matt, one of the team, stayed behind to help me get set up on the app and I could immediately see that the system was up and running.

     

    What benefits have you seen since your installation with Soly?

    Since installation, I haven’t drawn any electricity from the grid; in fact I’m only using 50% of what I’m generating! I’ve switched over to Octopus and am currently in the process of getting set up on the Octopus Intelligent Flux tariff. This should be really beneficial for me as they will pay you the same price to import and export, so if you generate excess in the summer, that should cover your winter usage. The panels are doing better than I thought they would to be honest – installing a solar system has allowed me to feel much more free to use energy, for example, I’ve had my immersion heater reinstalled because I might as well heat my water with electricity for free. I don’t expect to be paying anything for my electricity now.

    My experience has been brilliant from start to finish. Soly did exactly what they said they were going to do. They provided good quality products that I was happy with and communicated well throughout the process.

     

    Would you recommend Soly to a friend? 

    Yes, I would recommend Soly. I’m currently speaking to my son about it – he’s interested in looking into getting solar panels and we will definitely use Soly’s referral scheme when he’s ready to go ahead.

     

    What advice would you give to others considering switching to solar? 

    All I’d say is, like anything, they can be quite expensive. If you’re going to spend money on a big outlay, then make sure you do your research beforehand. Companies like HIES have criteria for what to look for in a solar company. If you’ve done your research, you will understand the process and will therefore be able to communicate your needs more clearly and this will ensure you get the most suitable system installed.
